Traveling and doing card transactions internationally with your phone? (US to UK)

I’m located in the US, but I got accepted in an art show in London. I’m trying to figure out what to do for card transactions.

First issue is that I have an Essential PH-1 phone that Square (both connected and wireless) does not work on.

I’ve been using my boyfriend’s iPhone 8 for domestic art shows, and it’s all dandy.

The show in London is 3 days, so I’m not sure what to do because I don’t want to have to purchase another square while there only for it not to work with my phone (I’m actually not sure if **any** reader will work with this phone). I also know it will require a new account and bank account set up for the UK one too, which I don’t want to have to do.

An artist acquaintance was telling me the PayPal reader charges HUGE fees for anything international if you’re originally located in a different country you’re making the sale in.

Next is what to do about my actual service network while in another country. I have Sprint, and when I was in Japan for a week, I got a $500 bill for extra international fees and roaming charges, and that was under their international plan. I don’t think wireless will be available at the show, too.

I’ve been thinking about switching phones with my boyfriend for the weekend like we normally do, but I’m terrified of him getting some outrageous bill then for international fees (he’s on AT&T if that helps any).

Someone suggested I use a VPN and/or spoof… But again, my PH-1 phone seems incapable of doing that since I’ve tried multiple times before. I also don’t know how to, or want to, jailbreak my phone due to insurance reasons.

Another option is sending people an invoice through PayPal or let them send me money, but that goes back to the unstable wireless, and many people easily scam artists that way by later claiming they never got the item.

Any advice would help. Thanks!
